The Water Crab & Awareness Parks were
considered as a way to create a better understanding and appreciation of water
treatment processes, sustainability practices, composting, greenhouses and the
Modular Closed Unit System Design Concept.
The design for the Water
Crab Sculpture was first imagined by Fred Philips and the
AWARENESS PARKS and vertical waste water
treatment concept as a means to free up useable land for such a community space
and tourist attraction, was a combined effort of Valerie Kneen-Teed & Fred
Phillips as they imagined a place that would be fun to visit and learn
from.
The Water Crab consists of a final water holding tank, or
the middle tank of the building, that is 2 feet deep and has a lily impeller
that spins the tons of contantly flowing water from the tank and out through
the carbon glass pipes, that look like crab legs, to reintroduce the purified
water back into the natural water way.
Directly underneath the final
holding tank, is a shallow 1 foot deep aquarium that holds small fish, like
gold fish or minnows.
Above the final holding tank are
transparent, dome shaped, solar panels that provide power to the facility. All
of these carbon glass parts are lined with a string of orang lights to create
an orange outline of the crab, especially at night. The orangle lights along
the pipes also act as a final UV anti-bacterrial/anti-viral treatment for the
water before it reintroduced into the ocean or natural body of water.

Above the Water Crab solar panels, there are two hands which hold a
blue plasma ball (the plasma ball creates lightening sparks, jumping out to the
edges of the ball). Inside of the blue ball there is a black metal silouette of
the tree of life. Resting on the top of the plasma ball is a sculpture of an
eagle.
AT NIGHT: The facility looks
like a giant orange Water Crab, with the hands silouette on the globe, and the
silouette of the tree of life inside. The glow of the globe, highlights the
underside of the eagle.
DURING THE
DAY:The Water Crab rests upon a Visitor's Centre structure. When you
walk into the Visitor's Centre and look up through the glass structure, you see
the blue sky, with the fish swimming around, and the silouette of the hands
holding the blue globe.
INSIDE THE VISITOR'S
CENTRE There is:
- A Hermit Crab Station: Children can hold a
hemit crab udner the supervision of a facilitator, and have hermit crab
races
- Picture Book Library: Parents could sit and
read with young children about water treatment facilities, sea creatures,
natural wild life, plants, animals, water, the earth, the night sky and other
topics key to the park. On the floor in front of the couches, there would be
plastic sea creature toyss that the children could play with while being read
to. They could be cleaned regularly, or large sized pillows sea creature
animals could be sold at the centre's gift shop.
- Water Table Activities: Water Tables with mill
streams or filtration setups that have sand and mud, where children could see
the basic process of silt filtration.
- Sand Box Activitties: Where children could play
in a sandbox located in an outside semi-shaded patio space attached to the
centre.
SPACES IN THE REST OF THE PARK AS AN
ACTIVITY BASED TOURIST DESTINATION:
- A Tee Pee & Fire Pit Space: Where Native
stories and astronomy can be discovered, songs taught and sung together, and
talks shared.
- A Tapa Restaurant / Coffee Shop Space: Where
local produce can be sampled in tiny portions, and patrons can order product
delivery directly from their tables to be sent to neighbours, friends, their
own homes or hotel/motel for later in the day. This restaurant has a glass wall
that separates it from the Day Care. This allows parents to relax while
watching their young children play.
- The Day Care Space:Suitalble for children 9
months-6 years old. It has a number of play stations including a water station,
sand station, tricycle race track, dinky car race track, Thomas the Train
Engine track, a kitchen set, a larger lego block station etc..
- STEM Centre Space: Focused on teaching
applications of Science, Tech, Engineering, Art & Math, patrons could learn
about water treatment, and try building their Waste Water Treatment Plant.
- A Teen Centre Space: Where activites could be
created by and for the teens. Tie dye T-Shirts, Woodworking, Musical
Instruments, Singing, Drama, Jewellery Making, etc.
- A Small Theatre Space: Where Native videos on
seasons, medicine, culture and history, or short movies on on ecology, closed
systems, could run regularly throughout the day for anyone to go in and
watch.
- A Stage With A White Wall: Where during the
day, teens can perform Kareoke & Dramas, and in the evening, a movie can be
played, guest speakers can give talks, or local artsits can share their
talents
- A Greenhouse: Where patrons can learn about
composting techniques, vertical greenhouses and children can plant bonsai
trees, or build imaginary landscapes with small animal figurines that they can
take home with them.
- A Rooftop Restaurant Space: Where patrons after
selecting a variety of moderately priced foods and drinks from a farmers market
seletcion of foods and eat out under the stars, listen to the ocean, look at
the silouette and listen to some live music.
